Arti Naidu with Vama Life Wellness

Tell us about your unique handmade product.

Vama Life Wellness Body Care Products were specifically created with pregnant and postpartum women and their babies in mind. Although safe for everyone to use. We’ve created a line of products from body scrubs to bug sprays that are all natural and handmade locally. All essential oils are hand blended into every jar or bottle.

Have you always expressed your creativity? If not, what triggered your passion for creating your product?

As an Esthetician I’ve always had interest in making body care products especially scrubs but I didn’t start to make products untill I was throwing a spa party for my girlfriends and decided to make up a recipe for a scrub to give away as gifts. Well, they loved it! And I sold my first jar in February. I was inspired to make more products because I enjoyed it, it was relaxing for me. I loved the aromas and most importantly how it made my friends feel.

Did you have any doubts when you decided to open up your shop and sell your handmade products

Hahaha… Umm YES! This was all very new to me I didn’t know how I would turn my passion into a business or if people would buy my products. Actually spent most of the time feeling nauseated. Hahah

What do you love most about your handmade business?

I love that I am doing something I love and it makes me feel happy. Watching people discover my products is the best part when they see and feel the results.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I am inspired by Ayurveda, by pregnant women, by babies, by essential oils that have so many therapeutic uses. I am inspired by other women that are conscious about synthetic chemicals and hormones that refuse to use products with “junk” in them. I am inspired by moms that want to make different choices for their babies then their mothers did for them.

What has been the best marketing strategy for generating sales and exposure?

The best strategy that has worked for me has been to team up with like minded individuals who really believe in my products. I still have a lot to achieve in terms of my campaign plan. But I truly feel the people I attract to my products find it resonates with them.

What advice would you give to someone who is one the fence about pursuing a creative endeavour?

Just do it! We are all here to discover and fulfill our purpose and gift the world with our knowledge. Since I’ve started I’ve met so many wonderful people that have helped me along the way simply because I was open to receiving. Of course with the good comes bad so just stay patient. On step at a time. Literally my mantra everyday.

Julie Cameron of Art Rose Prints

Tell us about your unique handmade product.

Hello! I’m Julia, the artist behind Art Rose. Over a year I’ve grown my brand of glam watercolor illustrations to cover a wide array of categories. These categories range from makeup, fashion, weddings, babies, bible verses and more. All of my prints are handmade from my original paintings
and packaged up with pink and sparkles before they make their way to you!

Have you always expressed your creativity? If not, what triggered your passion for creating your product?

I would say until I launched my brand my creativity was stifled a bit. I was working as an esthetician and hardly had any time to paint. After having my first baby girl I was inspired to make one of a kind pieces for her nursery and that’s where Art Rose was born. My daughter is my muse, my inspiration, my drive, without her Art Rose wouldn’t be a success.

Did you have any doubts when you decided to open up your shop and sell your handmade products

When I launched Art Rose I had so many doubts my confidence in my work really lacked. Through opening Art Rose and using marketing on my social media to meet my market and target audience I ended up getting involved in a community and have made long lasting friendships filled with support from like minded woman entrepreneurs. I still experience doubts time to time but I believe doubts are needed to grow with your business. If I had opened Art Rose and been scared to evolve and expand my brand or even change my logo and packaging I wouldn’t have the success I do today with my business. It’s the little details that grow your customer base so if I’m ever doubting a product that’s a cue to me to work my hardest to improve it. Quality and care you put into your business will always come back to you a message from a happy client is worth more to me than anything!

What do you love most about your handmade business?

I love the freedom of being my own boss. I absolutely love to be able to do what I love and still stay at home with my daughter and be able to watch her grow. I truly believe God has blessed me by giving me my daughter and being able to share my talent. I love living in an environment that’s beautiful because it fills me with energy and confidence to get things done! I love getting photos and messages from clients of how they use my work in their own home to achieve the same feeling.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My inspiration can come from anywhere, from a makeup product I love to a flower in my garden. I love social media sites such as Pinterest or apps like Instagram and YouTube. I’m always redecorating and changing furniture and art because my inspiration is always changing.

What has been the best marketing strategy for generating sales and exposure?

Instagram hands down! I find Instagram to be amazing to connect with customers directly through out the process. I see a certain product people love like a lipstick print and think “alright I’ll make some new lipstick paintings” and they sell right away! It’s also an amazing tool to connect with other businesses and the friendships I’ve built with some shops are bloggers are amazing. Doing collaborations with other shops and blogs that share similar interests advertises you to a new audience who may not have been exposed to you before.

What advice would you give to someone who is one the fence about pursuing a creative endeavour?

Don’t hesitate, you will never be ready or know everything behind running a business it’s all a learning process. You grow and evolve and learn from mistakes and get better from them. If I had had the volume of sales I do now in the beginning of starting Art Rose I probably would have gave up because I wouldn’t know how to handle it, how to package, how to include a sales reciept. Because I grew with my business I am ready to expand one scared step at a time! When my daughter gets old enough if she enjoys crafts or art as well I plan to help her open her own online shop I believe it’s never to soon!

Lynnelle Peters of Tiptoe Meadow

Tell us about your unique handmade product.

Tiptoe Meadow offers beautifully unique 3D wallart, mobiles, accessory holders and some sweet headband designs as well!

Have you always expressed your creativity? If not, what triggered your passion for creating your product?

I’ve always loved to write music, draw, paint and find creative ways to accomplish tasks. My desire to start a line of nursery decor stemmed from a need for something that wasn’t mass produced and that suited the space I was designing for our baby girl on the way.

Did you have any doubts when you decided to open up your shop and sell your handmade products

I was really excited to get going as I had previously owned a small hair accessory business. It was exciting to be moving into something that I was really passionate about!

What do you love most about your handmade business?

I love the freedom to create my own schedule as it suits our family. I love having the ability to design and be as creative as want to be. The connections made with fellow small business owners is another thing that I enjoy so much and the way they all inspire me as well is something I value greatly. One other thing that I’ve comes to realize I have a great love for is our customers and the warmth I feel towards those that support what I work hard to offer them and in addition their love and support through online interaction/social media!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I’m inspired by the beauty of nature and also very encouraged creatively by the playful and joy-filled spirit of our children. Current trends lightly inspire but I try to think outside of that box as much as possible.

What has been the best marketing strategy for generating sales and exposure?

I’m still learning a lot in this area but the things that have never failed are staying active on social media, connecting with other businesses and providing the best customer service possible!

What advice would you give to someone who is one the fence about pursuing a creative endeavour?

Make sure you understand the commitment that’s involved, anticipate many learning curves, set clear goals, write a business plan (!!) and find ways to make sure you work hard but take lots of time to refocus and refresh as needed.

Janette Shearer of VMD Jewellery

Tell us about your unique handmade product.

I make Custom and Designed Dream Catchers, Bullet Jewellery and Hand Stamped, Hand Dyed Genuine Leather Keychains.

Have you always expressed your creativity? If not, what triggered your passion for creating your product?

I think I always wanted to express creativity but never really found anything that I was REALLY good at. Writing was about the only thing that creatively I was happy with. I gave up writing for many many years and then when I was pregnant with my second child, Zoe, due to complex pregnancies I was off work for the duration of my pregnancy and I began my blog, and I started to sell my bullet jewellery, then I tried my hand at a Dream Catcher and it spiralled from there!

Did you have any doubts when you decided to open up your shop and sell your handmade products

As I said previously, I always really wanted to be creative but never ever felt like anything that I did was good enough. People would say “that’s really cool” but I never really trusted that they were being honest above actually liking my products. Opening my shop meant that I was opening myself up to criticism, to open up my heart to others, to let people in. There is something absolutely terrifying about pouring your heart into a product and then asking people you don’t know to love it more than you do and give you their hard earned money in exchange! So I doubted whether I could open myself up to others and whether I was actually making something that people liked!

What do you love most about your handmade business?

First, I love that it affords me the opportunity to stay home and be with my girls and be with them while they grow up. Second, I love that it challenges me to look beyond myself, to push forward even when it’s REALLY hard, and it is hard more often than not but my girls get to learn first hand that not everything in life is easy and sometimes what you are passionate about is often one of the hardest and more rewarding ventures. This handmade business has taught me how hard I truly can work!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Honestly, most of it comes from a dream, or from my friends, my girls, what I see on the internet. Sometimes, colours will speak to me and I’ll mull it over on in my head for a while until it really kicks me. I have an incredible tribe of creative ladies that I’ll say,”I’m thinking about doing this… What do you think?” and they’ll help guide me, motivate me, or completely redirect me! A good tribe is crucial!

What has been the best marketing strategy for generating sales and exposure?

I’ll let you know when I figure it out! LOL.. Sales wise that’s tough, I”m still figuring it out! I feel like the minute I think I might know, something changes. I’ve worked mostly on exposure so far and getting myself out there, getting my products seen, letting people know what I do and what I can do. I’ve been pretty lucky so far with people who have ordered something or have seen my work at a market or on IG and they are kind enough to refer people my way. Word of mouth is so important! I think my blogging experience and exposure has been vital as well. More people know me as a blogger than as a maker, so I feel like my incredible readers have been so kind of returning the love and sending people my way!

What advice would you give to someone who is one the fence about pursuing a creative endeavour?

Best thing I can say, try to set aside personal feelings you have. It’s business! I realize that’s tough to do because we pour our hearts into our products, it’s time away from our families, our friends, our own well being. It’s blood, sweat and tears most often but if someone doesn’t like your product or doesn’t want to buy your product, it’s not you personally they’re saying no to you. You cannot take it personally! That was really hard for me and still is but I’ve found the moment I step back and look at it from someone else’s perspective, I can usually talk myself off the emotional ledge! You kind of have to just jump in. It’s hard but as Mae West, “I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it” It is worth it, whether you succeed or fail, you WILL walk an incredible journey along the way! That is priceless!
